Netmums Coffee House Chat - Sex education 'should start early' say parents

In a survey by Netmums the majority of parents said that they thought sex education should start early, between the ages of 8 and 12.

Almost half of parent felt this was the right age for children to start learning about sex and relationships. 3 in 10 parents thought that such lessons should start later, between the ages of 12-15.

National Children's Bureau - 'Parents want support with sex and relationships education'

A new evidence briefing from the Sex Education Forum, part of leading children’s charity the National Children’s Bureau, concludes that parents are very supportive of sex and relationships education (SRE) – with 84% believing that both home and school should be involved*.

Children and young people themselves are clear that parents are an important source of information about sex and relationships – yet the research shows that many parents underestimate just how much their children want to communicate with them. In fact, one survey revealed that two-thirds of parents believed their teenagers have no desire to discuss sex with them.

BBC News - School lessons 'a key source for sex education'

Young people get more information about sex in school lessons than they do from their friends or parents, according to research by Edinburgh University.

About half of 15-year-old boys and a third of girls said school was the place they learned most about sexual matters.

The study showed a change since 2002, when youngsters said they got most information from friends.

The survey was carried out in 300 schools across Scotland.

Secondary school sex education lessons used to typically involve a middle-aged teacher blushing nervously as she rolled a condom over a cucumber in front of nervously giggling teenagers.

Today's coital curriculum sees children taught about the darker side of the birds and the bees. Sex crime detectives are going into the classroom to speak about the risks of more modern phenomena such as internet dating, date rape and gang rape.
